My love-hate relationship with Fortnite Ch7S3

Seasonal Thinking

You know how when a new Fortnite season begins, we’ll ask each other , “So what do you think of the new season?” It just dawned on me that initial thinking often may not match up with end-of-season thoughts. Seasons are dynamic. They add, delete, and change game features throughout each season. This causes me to like or dislike each season more as it progresses. So let’s get into Fortnite Ch7S3 specifically.

What I love about Fortnite Ch7S3

I really love having Glider Redeploy and Pocket Shockwaves for movement in Zero Build Fortnite Ch7S3. Although these mechanics were introduced in Ch7S2, I’m really getting comfortable with and loving the freedom of movement they provide.

As a tree camper, being able to leap off tall trees without any worry of taking fall damage has been particularly useful. This has also come in handy in ZeroBuild tournaments. Glider redeploy movement helped me qualify for my first ever cash tournament. That was thrilling!

The pocket shockwaves are very useful as well. They help me get around quickly and also handy for being to launch myself into a tree safely as end-game closes in.

What I hate about about Fortnite Ch7S3

I hate Battle Bus Victory Royales! Introduced mid-season Fortnite Ch7S3, this is a new way that the game can end. Historically, Battle Royale games end when 1 final player or team is left standing. This is aligned with the true definition of what Battle Royale means.

What then is a Battle Bus Victory Royale?

A Battle Bus Victory Royale is a new mode that randomly gets invoked. Once this mode is triggered, 2 minutes will remain in the game. To win, players must rush to the location that the Battle Bus appears, and be safely aboard it when the 2 minute timer elapses and the Battle Bus leaves. This mode can have multiple winners and even have no winners.

So why don’t I like it?

First off, it feels to me like with 2 minutes left in a Battle Royale game, we’re forced to play a completely kind of catch-the-bus game. Feels out of context and very disjointed.

Secondly, it brings out the griefers. Even though everyone aboard wins, more often than not, there are fights on the bus. Guess I’m not a fan of people fighting on buses!

There’s also a very weird scenario. Some griefers for entertainment will throw a shockwave as the Battle Bus timer is expiring. This shocks everyone off the bus. No one wins. Ha. Ha. Very funny.

There are good people who will throw friendship bubbles to try and keep everyone aboard the bus safe. Unfortunately, the griefers far outweigh them in frequency and yes, you can be shock waved out of a friendship bubble.

Sprites: I don’t love or hate them

Fortnite Ch7S3 introduced Sprites.

What are Sprites?

Fortnite Sprites are extractable little helpers introduced in Chapter 7 Season 3 that grant players active or passive gameplay buffs on the battlefield. These companions can be discovered inside random chests or dropped by certain NPCs across the island. Each Sprite grants a special power. Once equipped, they sit on your back. Players can safely extract them at stations. Once extracted, they are the player’s to keep and remain in your locker.

From what I’ve observed, most players seem to be enjoying collecting Sprites and are thrilled to find the rare ones. This to me has the feeling of altering Fortnite Battle Royale from a strategic survival game to a collector’s type of game.

I guess for now they don’t annoy me and rarely delight me so consider me; Sprite neutral. This could change pending me finding the rarest Sprite of the week!
