Fortnite Remix Strategy

In this article I’ll share my strategy for ranking up to Unreal in Fortnite Remix Ch5S5. It took only 116 games which was less than half the amount of games it took me last season. Here’s a chart that shows how many games it has taken me to reach Unreal each season:

My Strategy for Ranking to Unreal Super Fast

Knowing that that CH5S5 was a mini-season that would last about 4 weeks, I was determined to use everything I learned to push hard and rank up quickly. It took me a little over a week to reach Unreal. Here’s the keys to my strategy for CH5S5; the Fortnite Remix Season.

Identifying an Ideal Drop Spot

My goal was to identify a landing or drop spot that would at least be out of the storm for the first storm or two, preferably the first several storms where I could remain relatively out of harm’s way for much of the game. I keyed in on Whispering Woods. It’s bountiful with trees and covers a large surface area on the map so regardless of where the first storm formed, I could avoid storm damage for at least one storm camping safely in a tree.

Staying on the Bus to the Very End

I stayed on the bus to the very last moment and popped my glider immediately upon exiting. At that point I glided back towards Whispering Woods and waited for the first storm ring to be identified. Once it becomes visible, I select my drop spot based on the area of Whispering Woods that will be out of the storm for the longest.

Drop in my Pre-Selected Tree

Yes. I literally identified different individual trees in the forest that were ideal for camping. Armed with knowledge now of where the first storm will form, it’s time to pick my tree to camp in and get nestled safely. Landing safely in trees can be tricky and takes some trial and error. I hand selected certain trees to land in. The considerations taken into account for my tree selection were:

  • The tree had to be reached without gliding over populated landmarks.
  • The tree had to provide a reliable landing area (it’s easy to fall thru many of the trees which could leave me exposed).
  • The tree had to be in an area where it would be least likely to be chopped down by players harvesting wood.
  • The tree had to provide maximum cover knowing players could frequently be passing by.
  • The tree had to be easy to get out of without incurring significant fall damage (many trees are taller than they appear!)
  • The tree had to have a bush nearby just in case there was a problem with the landing (a former submariner always likes to have a backup plan!).

Who puts this much thought into tree selection? Me! 🤣

Leaving my Tree when Storm Arrives

I found it always pays to be polite. Once the storm reaches me, I wait about 10 seconds before getting out of the tree. This gives players that are running to avoid the storm ample time to pass thru without sighting me.

Harvesting Wood & Fireplaces

In Fortnite Battle Royale most players chop down trees for wood to build their forts. This season I chopped trees for firewood! Upon leaving my tree, I gathered wood by chopping several trees and headed directly for an area that contains two campfires. I would then restore my health fully twice which would pretty much get me down to the last 10 – 15 players left. In between the first fireplace healing and the 2nd, I search nearby known loot areas for bandages and medkits.

Endgame = Fishing Time!

With my campfires being exhausted and heals in my inventory, it’s time to grab a fishing pole and head to a pond. By this time, I’ve typically already reached the top 10 in placement. Fishing this season is tough but doable. Fishing rapidly will generally keep me ahead of a 1 DPS storm. Out of my 116 games to Unreal, I literally made it to 2nd place about 20% of the time by fishing to endgame.

Getting Eliminated by the Storm

I don’t like being eliminated by the storm and wish I didn’t have to. However, the algorithm seems to severely penalize players for being eliminated by a player of a lesser rank. In my experience, with all the new game modes recently added to Fortnite, I’ve learned that there is a greater than 50% chance that if I fight at the end, I will be eliminated by a lower ranked player than me. I didn’t create the algorithm but if I want to rank up quickly, I need to respect it. Therefore, for the last 75% or so of my games, I chose to be eliminated by the storm.

Getting Eliminated by Peterbot

To wrap up, here’s an entertaining elimination I suffered in my first Champion ranked game this season. Let’s just say I was in the wrong place at the wrong time! You can see it here.
