This is a continuation of the series of a 64 year old pops (that’s me) blogging my journey to see what level I can achieve in this season’s Fortnite Ranked Battle Royale Build (Chapter 5 Season 2). Each week, I share my progress, observations, and learnings.
This Week’s Progress
It’s been a week and a half since my last post. Since then, I’ve progressed from 49% through the Champion rank to 83%. Progress has been much better than the previous two weeks.
Week 8 – Journey & Learnings
- My perseverance is certainly being tested. Progress has become extremely slow and the ability to slide backwards is all too easy.
- There is no guarantee of being rewarded for a well played game. It’s hard to finish in the top 10 now yet three times this week when I’ve done just that, I made no progress in my ranking.
- What is guaranteed is that a poor performance gets punished! Finishing in 74th place cost me 4% in my ranking. In another game, I finished in 12th place and was killed by an Unreal player to whom I dealt 182 damage points…my reward…I lost 1 percentage of my progress.
- Building a small fort once safely inside the storm has proven to be helpful and helped me get to many top 10 finishes.
- There is no room for error or experimentation. Players at this level make few mistakes and will capitalize on any unfamiliarity I may have whether it be exploring a new location or trying to use a new weapon.
- I’ve had a couple of stretches where my slow and steady progress was erased in a heartbeat. This has been incredibly demoralizing and twice had me feel like giving up. Seems the only cure for this feeling is to get back on the horse and continue the journey!
- I sense that there’s a lot of Champion level players like myself that are hearing the clock ticking on Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2. Come May 24th, a new season begins and rankings are all erased so everyone needs to begin again.
What’s Next
The final push to Unreal. By the time of my next post, I’ll share whether I made it or not. I’m being tested and need to buckle down and literally whether the storms. I’ve learned a lot and need to apply all those learnings to every single game. Stay tuned!
